11-11-11: World War I Remembered through Words and Melody

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

William Brooks - Invited speaker

This hour-long illustrated lecture focuses on the World War I sheet music holdings in the Myers Collection at the Center for American Music and also songs from the Smithsonian Institution's collection of sheet music. In addition to details about the songs and composers, the talk explored the changing musical styles, marketing, and dissemination of music during the war years. William Brooks and Laurie Matheson, accompanied by Rachel Jensen, also performed six of the songs discussed; others were illustrated by contemporaneous piano rolls and recordings.
