A new “hybrid” gridded 1 km × 1 km emission inventory for paddy stubble burning reveals that stubble burning is a massive source of VOCs unaccounted for by existing emission inventories and overwhelms other anthropogenic activities over the Indo-Gangetic Plain

A new hybrid gridded emission inventory for paddy stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana (Northwest India) in 2017. The emission inventory was compiled using the emission factors (EFs) measured from on-field fires (both flaming and smouldering fires) and combined with 1 km × 1 km stubble burning activity constrained by annual crop production yields and VIIRS detected fires. Results show that paddy stubble burning emitted pollutants up to 20 times more than traffic and municipal waste burning over north-west India, and the inventory was also a significant improvement in terms of quantification and speciation information compared to existing global inventories like GFED, GFAS, FINN and EDGAR.
