Why are things the shapes they are? Mathematics is the language of shapes as well as of numbers. Meet three accomplished female mathematicians at this informal lunch and discussion session. Marjorie Senechal (Smith College and Editor in Chief of the Mathematical Intelligencer), Reidun Twarock (University of York, England), and Jean Taylor (NYU and Rutgers University) will be on hand to chat about recent revelations of geometry in nature. Hear how they've used math to study the shapes of viruses and foams, to investigate the internal structures of crystals and quasicrystals, and to understand why icosahedra are the stem cells of the solid state, and learn why these women think mathematics is the most exciting thing a person can do.
