William Tyndale’s 1526 translation of the New Testament is a landmark in the history of the English Bible. It was the first printed text of any kind, and the first to use the Greek original. For his text, Tyndale used Erasmus’s Novum Instrumentum, first printed in 1516. This month sees the 500th Anniversary of Erasmus’s monumental book. This lecture discusses Tyndale, his translation, and his use of Erasmus. In what ways is Tyndale an Erasmian humanist as well as an early English Protestant? In the process, I will illustrate the distinctiveness of Tyndale’s English and show why he still matters. - See more at: http://www.aucklandcastle.org/events/show/tyndale-erasmus-and-the-english-bible#sthash.4jZSaVGb.dpuf
