We are doing some research to check that we have correctly translated a questionnaire for young people into British Sign Language (BSL). The questionnaire is used to ask people about emotional and other difficulties. The most commonly used questionnaire in CAMHS services is called the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). It is available in 60 written languages but as yet not in BSL. This means that the SDQ is not available to many D/deaf young people in their first language. The SDQ is used both as a screening tool and to monitor outcomes. It is important that a BSL version of the SDQ is available as a specialist team of mental health professionals has recently set up a service to help D/deaf children where there are significant emotional and behavioural issues such as depression, self harm, ADHD and autism. We need to make sure that this new service is helping D/deaf young people in the best way possible. We are asking lots of young people, parents and teachers to take part. Many people taking part won’t have emotional difficulties – we just need lots of people to help us make sure that the BSL versions measure the same thing as the written English SDQ.| Period | 1 Jun 2011 → 30 Jun 2014 |
