Description
Croatian National Research Institutes: 2011: Panel Member of Research Quality Study. I was invited to serve as the expert Art Historian member of the international Research Quality panel to assess the Croatian National Research Institutes in Zagreb 23-26 May 2011. In light of Croatia’s imminent entry to the EU, the Croatian Government determined that the research institutes should be independently reviewed to assess their effectiveness in terms for search and to receive advice as to how best to prepare for EU entry. The panel comprised 3 experts for 3 Research Institutes in Zagreb: Croatian Institute of History, the Croatian Institute of Art History, and the Croatian Institute of Archaeology. The QR Expert assessment panel consisted of respectively Prof. J. Connelly (Berkeley) for History and Prof. V. Gaffney (Birmingham, UK) for Archaeology, Prof. H. Hills for History of Art. We visited each national institute, examined publications, conducted extensive interviews with staff at all levels, from Ph.D. students to the Directors of the Research Institutes and with his / her senior management team, with extensive discussion and inspection of research facilities. We each drafted a formal report complete with recommendations for future research directions and policy in relation to the Research Institute of our respective discipline, each of which we then polished and completed as a team. These reports were submitted to the Interior Ministry of Croatia in late August 2011 for political action. In 2014 I was invited again to undertake this role in November 2014, but was unable to do so, as it would have required my absence from a week’s undergraduate teaching at York.Period | Aug 2011 |
