Title: How can we include learning disabled children and young people in research?
Topic: In this talk we describe two recent studies which have focused on co-producing optimal data collection approaches for a diverse range of learning-disabled children and young people, including those who communicate using methods other than traditional speech. In the first study we interviewed parents and professionals and observed young people in school in order to gain insight into their communication preferences. In the study we are currently running we have conducted a systematic review and an ethnographic study of two different classes in a local special school. We are currently analysing our data with a view to using it as the basis for building an open access library of evidence-informed data collection tools for research with this population. In this talk we will share our findings to date and would welcome discussion of researchers' experiences of working directly with learning disabled participants and the best way forward to develop a co-produced resource that is genuinely inclusive and genuinely useful.
