Description

Expert Art Historian to serve on an international Research Quality panel to assess the Croatian National Research Institutes in Zagreb

I was invited to serve as expert Art Historian to serve on an international Research Quality panel to assess the Croatian National Research Institutes in Zagreb 23-26 May 2011. In light of Croatia’s imminent entry to the EU, the Croatian Government determined that the research institutes should be independently reviewed to assess their effectiveness in terms for search and to receive advice as to how best to prepare for EU entry. The panel comprised 3 experts for 3 Research Institutes in Zagreb: Croatian Institute of History, the Croatian Institute of Art History, and the Croatian Institute of Archaeology. The QR Expert assessment panel also consisted of respectively Professor John Connelly (Berkeley) for History and Professor Vince Gaffney (Birmingham UK) for Archaeology. We visited each national institute, conducted extensive interviews with staff at all levels from PhD students to the Directors of the Research Institutes and his / her senior management team, with opportunities for extensive discussion and inspection of research facilities. We each drafted a formal report in relation to the Research Institute of our respective disciplinary expertise, which we then polished and completed as a team. These reports were submitted to the Interior Ministry of Croatia in late August 2011.
