Description
(York Algebra Seminar Online)Title: Partial Fields and Matroid Templates
Abstract: The notion of a partial field, introduced by Semple and Whittle, is used to define certain classes of representable matroids. After a brief introduction to matroid theory, I will define partial fields and give some examples. The Matroid Minors Project of Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle has led to an announced result about the structure of members of certain minor-closed classes of representable matroids. A key tool in this result is the notion of a template.
In this talk, I will describe some results about templates and results that use templates to describe the structure of certain classes of matroids defined by partial fields. As time permits, these classes will be the golden-mean, dyadic, near-regular, and sixth-root-of-unity matroids.
This talk is partially based on joint work with Ben Clark, James Oxley, and Stefan van Zwam.
