Medieval Romances, Trash Fiction and Rebel Women

Activity: Talk or presentationPublic lecture

Description

Talk about medieval romances, how they changed from being a form of high literary culture to being seen as the 'trash fiction' of the Middle Ages, why popular fiction been characterised as a form of guilty pleasure throughout the ages, and how it is no coincidence that concerns over romances’ corrupting influence arose right around the time that more women started reading them. It also looks at the rebel women who refused to let men tell them what they could or could not read.
