Description
The Maths Society lecture series returns! And to start the year we are delighted to have Dr. Stephen Connor, probabilist extraordinaire, to entertain and inspire on a topic dear to his heart. Rumour has it that he always has a pack of cards in his pocket, just in case... Here is the abstract: "How many times should you shuffle a pack of cards? How do casinos (try to) ensure that their cards are well shuffled? Why should we care? And what has this to do with mathematics? In this talk I'll try to give an idea of how these questions can be answered, and why the answers are interesting, using a heady concoction of probability, group theory, combinatorics, analysis, and maybe even a little magic." Join us Wednesday 23rd October (week 4) in P/L/002, 17:30 - 18:30, free entry - all welcome. Afterwards we will inevitably head for drinks, hopefully dragging Stephen and his cards along.
