Description

The late Clive Emsley (1944-2020) was a towering figure in the field – a prolific scholar, a remarkable network-builder and a supportive mentor to generations of criminal justice historians. This roundtable aims to appraise his enormous contribution to the field, to assess his legacy and, in this light, to consider future directions for research in crime and criminal justice history. The discussants will profile Clive’s contribution in the round, before offering more focused commentaries of his work on the history of policing, the history of crime and the history of crime and criminal justice in Europe. Mixing scholarly reflection with personal reminiscences, this roundtable will mark the passing of a remarkable scholar and prompt reflections on what lies ahead for criminal justice history.
