Description

Professor Spiller was an invited speaker in the Quantum Information Technologies & Financial Services workshop co-hosted by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) RegTech & Advanced Analytics team and the UK Quantum Computing & Simulation Hub. This workshop is a part of a Horizon Scanning work programme, an important element in developing a standardised approach to exploring emerging technologies and identifying key questions and challenges these technologies pose to financial regulation, markets and consumers. Quantum computing is a growing area of interest for financial services firms, with many firms engaging in quantum and quantum-inspired Proofs of Concepts (PoCs). Similarly, the technology itself is fast-maturing, with major technology firms and research institutions providing significant investment. Quantum computing has the potential to convey an advantage to its users over those without quantum computers by allowing firms to process larger amounts of information, access richer insights and solve a variety of old and new problems with greater computing power. The potential adoption of quantum computing poses important questions for the regulator, especially in the areas of security, competition and policy. The workshop provided an opportunity to engage with leading academics on the topic of quantum commuting and to understand the key impacts on financial services, focussing on the three mentioned themes. The workshop was a mix of presentations and break-out room discussions to help identify the key implications of this emerging technology and its impact on financial markets, firms and consumers. Participants included stakeholders from across the FCA, Bank of England, National Cyber Security Centre, UK National Quantum Computing Centre, Oxford University, Bristol University, York University and others.
