Description
In this panel discussion we will open up questions about the need, purpose and aims of Queer Disability Studies. We will do this through sharing two films which could sit within this disciplinary space. Our two films respond to questions within disability and queer studies, and both seek to stimulate discussions around whose bodies, relationships, lives and identities are recognised and accommodated within public settings and services.First, we will share ‘The Toilet.’ which was made as part of the AHRC-funded Around the Toilet project (http://aroundthetoilet.com). Around the Toilet used arts-based methodologies to explore what makes a safe and accessible toilet space, centring the experiences of trans, queer and disabled people. Our film, ‘The Toilet.’ explores how current toilet provisions prioritise some people’s needs at the expense of others, and shows toilet access as a social and political issue.
Second, we will show a group of co-produced short animations from the NIHR SSCR funded Support, Gender and Sexualities project themed around ‘independence’, ‘respect’, ‘confidence’, ‘identity’, ‘trust’ and ‘acceptance’ in relation to personal assistance relationships with young disabled adults, focused specifically on the experiences of LGBTQ+ users of personal assistance. These themes capture the relationships between personal support and the identities that influence how that support is experienced and organised.
Following the screening of these films we will open up a number of questions which we think are important for those within Disability Studies to explore, centring in particular on the needs for solidarities and coalitional thinking. This panel will be convened by the organisers of the Queer Disability Studies Network. However, we hope this will be an interactive and discussion based session, and will welcome input from the audience.
