Description
Resolution Foundation seminar on housing affordability and low income familiesThis is a seminar hosted by the Resolution Foundation on housing affordability and how low income families cope with high housing costs. This seminar will bring together a small selection of experts in housing policy and practice to shape the development of a major report on housing affordability that the Foundation will publish later in the summer. It is well known that soaring house prices and rents, coupled with stagnant income growth in recent years, mean that paying for housing poses an increasing challenge to many ordinary families. In this context, a growing body of research has benchmarked housing affordability for typical households in different parts of the country. But there is no defined measure of housing affordability and little consensus on what an affordability threshold looks like across tenures and geographies. In this context, the Resolution Foundation is seeking to understand affordability more generally by framing the debate in the context of what people actually spend on housing, and how this varies geographically, by household characteristics and by housing type. At this seminar we will present preliminary analysis of national survey data that details where and for whom housing costs bite, and the factors that drive affordability issues. From this analysis, we hope to start a debate on how the many low income families looking to purchase or rent today cope with the cost of housing, and the choices and compromises they are faced with. Confirmed speakers include Dr Julie Rugg from the Centre for Housing Policy at the University of York and Mike Donaldson from L&Q. The Resolution Foundation’s Deputy Chief Executive, Vidhya Alakeson, will chair. The seminar will be held at the Resolution Foundation’s new offices at 25 Sackville Street, London, W1S 3AX on Friday 4 July, 9.30-11.30am, with refreshments available from 9am. We would really value your contribution and hope that you will be able to participate. Please RSVP to [email protected].
