Surviving Nuclear Zero: UNA UK and BASIC

Activity: Participating in or organising an eventConference participation

Description

"This event seeks to explore some long-standing issues around nuclear disarmament in a new and innovative format. It will engage two very different constituencies with a thought experiment that asks how Britain would protect itself and engage effectively in the world in its vital interests if it did not possess nuclear weapons. It therefore takes a national security perspective, though of course this is strongly linked to regional and global security and governance. By presenting their ideas to a live audience, the ideas will be tested, explored and voted on. Our approach takes seriously the cross-party commitment to the UK contributing to global nuclear disarmament and therefore rejects the idea that nuclear weapons will be retained in perpetuity. It also highlights the importance of taking the broader security context into account in creating a national consensus behind this project. Crucially, this approach is not designed to advocate that the UK moves towards a non-nuclear posture in the near future, but rather considers the impact of such an approach and the conditions that may be necessary if national security concerns are central to the discussion."
