Description
Review of Modern Foreign Language Pedagogy in Key Stages 3 and 4. Report for the Teaching Schools Council and the Department for EducationThis report provides recommendations for the teaching of foreign languages to children aged 11-16 in schools in England. Recommendations focus on the effective teaching of grammar and vocabulary, with a view to improving pupils' sense of progression and knowledge. Key recommendations include: 1) drawing explicit attention to form-function mappings in the input, during listening and reading 2) the importance of a verb lexicon i.e. the meaning of the verb stems 3) the explicit teaching of sound-spelling relations i.e. 'phonics' in the foreign language 4) the need for age-appropriate and stimulating content 5) the provision of plenty of opportunities for comprehension and production practice that communicates 'real' information. The recommendations draw on evidence from independent academic research done prior to the review, as well as observations, interviews and a literature review done as part of the review process. The review also draws on the considerable experience of members of the committee, in teaching, policy-making, advising and inspection. The report received support from the DfE and was discussed and received recommendation in the House of Lords.
