Description
Part of a series of workshops at international conservatoires with advanced students of historical and modern clarinet.Workshops were intended to raise the profile of the research project, explore ways of communicating embodied research to advanced student and professional practitioners, and encourage knowledge of and engagement with repertoire and sources related to Baermann, as well as building relationships with institutions for further collaboration. Workshops were delivered at the following music conservatoires: Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régionale de Paris (3 active participants, c. 30 passive participants) Sydney Conservatorium (September 2024, 3 active participants, c.10 passive participants) Konklijk Conservatorium Brussels (December 2024, 5 active participants, c. 10 passive partcipants) Konklijk Conservatorium Den Haag (January 2025, 4 active participants, c. 15 passive participants) Gent Conservatorium (February 2025, 6 active participants, c. 25 passive participants) Prior to the class, students in some venues were invited to explore draft resources on the Digital Baermann website. Each workshop consisted of a c. 1hr presentation and discussion of research from the Baermann's Body project, concentrating on issues of phrasing and breathing. This was followed by a masterclass with selected students who worked on pre-prepared repertoire, including music by Baermann and other related composers. This was used as the basis of further discussion around issues of teaching and performing C19th music. Following the event, participants were invited to fill in a feedback questionnaire to establish which elements of the workshop were most engaging and whether it had impacted on their practice or understanding. Responses received so far indicate that the workshops introduced new and significant knowledge and practices to the participants, and that most intend to engage further with the materials introduced in future.
