The standardising meeting for A level examiners has evolved into a complex day of training, on pre-marked scripts and involving gradual narrowing application of the mark scheme. Now some Awarding Bodies are finding training doesn’t work well enough to justify the expense and are swopping it for online marking tasks. I will look at some data from A level History and English examiner training and, using literature on de-biasing drawn from the field of Judgement and Decision Making, consider why examiner training may or may not be working, and what changes could be made in line with best practice from other fields.
