Professor David James from the University of Birmingham ran a postgraduate workshop on 'Uses of Criticism in an Era of Postcritique' as part of the CModS Creative Dissonance: Writing Now research strand.
The workshop explored some of the recent interventions and mini-manifestos surrounding descriptive reading and the ends of critique, which have opened up a larger debate about the very purpose of criticism. This included the issue, among other things, of how we might reconcile close reading and political commitment.
