Talk for the York Anglo-Scandinavian Society. The title of this talk is the first question suggested by Google when I type in "Why is the Finnish language..."; so I will try to answer this from the point of view of a linguist whose involvement with Finnish goes back a long way. I'll try and answer questions people often ask, like "why are the words so long?", "where does it come from?", and "isn't it very difficult?". I'll show you some of my favourite things about Finnish, and there will be a bit of audience participation in the form of linguistic puzzles for you to solve. Nähdään pian! (See you soon!)
