William Morris and the Politics of Pots

Activity: Talk or presentationPublic lecture

Gill Chitty - Speaker

William Morris's collection of German stoneware pottery, known as gres de Flandres, is displayed today at his former country home in Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire. It tells a fascinating story about his vision for everyday art and creativity. In this richly illustrated talk, we explore ideas about traditional craft and the politics of craft manufacture which shaped Morris’s own ‘making’ of things and, alongside this, the history of these traditionally produced German wares.
