Description

York: History and Future of the City (10x10x10)

This seminar will present social research on urban life in, and relating to, the City of York in the innovative and accessible ‘10x10x10’ format, chaired by Prof Kate Pickett: 10 speakers will each present for 10 minutes using 10 images. The City of York has been at the forefront of developments in social research for over a century and has been central to the development of public understandings of poverty in Britain. At this seminar both past and present research on history, health, urban change, transport, environment and art (among others) will consider York’s place in our knowledge of urban life and social divisions. The event will appeal both to the general public and to community groups in York, workers in the third sector and policy makers with an interest in York as an exemplar of urban social research. Key community, voluntary groups, government and policy organisations based in York will be targeted with letters of invitation and flyers. These groups will include The York and District Family History Society, York Archaeological Trust , York Community Group, York City Archives, York Museums Trust, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, York City Council, Yorkshire Forward, York in Transition, York Without Walls and Schumacher York. An advert for the event will also appear in the local newspaper. The audience comprised around 200 members of the public.
