History of Art was launched as an independent department within the University of York in 2000, having successfully developed under the auspices of the Departments of English and History.

Since then the department has expanded dramatically in size and range, and is now widely recognised as one of the most dynamic and successful in the UK.

We have particular research strengths in an exciting range of Western European art and architecture, but we research and teach across a wide spectrum of art history - from Anglo-Saxon sculpture to contemporary Lebanese video art.

Students benefit from our friendly informal small-group teaching methods, regular study trips and spectacular historic location.
