Organisation profile

The Institute for Effective Education (IEE), based at the University of York, has established itself as one of the leading education research units in the UK. Our experienced team has expertise across a range of research methodologies, although we focus primarily on quantitative research. We have particular strength in randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews evaluating classroom programmes and practices.

We are working to establish what works in teaching and learning – and why. Areas of particular interest include literacy, numeracy, and science in the UK and overseas, but also early childhood education, parenting, widening participation, and the effective use of technology.

The IEE works with schools, policy makers, and other researchers to share knowledge and to build support for evidence-based education in policy and practice. We focus on opportunities where we can provide expertise or practical tools. In addition to the research you will find here, the IEE also carries out a range of other activities including events, publications and courses.
