Organisation profile

Our research strengths fall in three main areas: history of philosophy, philosophy of mind, and ethics.

We have additional strengths in aesthetics and metaphysics, and collaborate with the Departments of Politics and Economics through the School of Politics, Economics and Philosophy, and with the Departments of English, History, History of Art, and Language and Linguistic Science in the Humanities Research Centre.

In 2008 we established a Centre for Research into Imagination, Creativity and Knowledge (CRICK), to bring together those working in the areas of philosophy of mind and aesthetics and to forge links with researchers outside the department and with the wider community.

In 2009, together with the Departments of Philosophy at the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield, we founded a Centre for the History of Philosophy (CHiPhi), to co-ordinate and develop research and teaching in history of philosophy.
