Organisation profile
The Department of Sociology (founded 1964) is one of the longest established in the UK and has played an important part in the development of the discipline internationally.
Our research continues to be recognised as amongst the most innovative and influential in the world. We were ranked 1st in the UK for research in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).
Our research is consolidated into four clusters which engage in empirical and theoretical work: Culture, values and practices; Gender, sexuality and inequalities; Language and social interaction; and Science, health and technology.
