Personal profile

Research interests

Andrea Schiavio is an internationally recognised expert in the field of music cognition.  In his work, he defends a '4E' approach - one that conceives of the musical mind as Embodied, Embedded, Extended, and Enactive. While this framework is increasingly receiving attention in the cognitive sciences, it remains rather unexplored in music. His aim is to fill this gap and provide richer understandings of music cognition and its creative manifestations.

Between 2019 and 2022 Andrea was PI of a "Stand Alone" project funded by FWF, the Austrian Science Fund. This grant (
€ 441,042.00) allowed him and his collaborators to explore innovative ways to conceptualise, assess, and enhance musical creativity in diverse pedagogical and performative settings. In 2017 he was awarded a "Lise Meitner" Fellowship by FWF (€ 148,480.00) to conduct research on musical participation in teaching and learning, helping to shed new light on the intersubjective nature of music pedagogy.
