Personal profile

Biography

My research contributions centre on European Union administrative law and policy-making; regulation and competition; and the UK’s relationship with the EU. I am particularly interested in interactions between institutions and their scrutiny, including regulatory governance and the role of courts. My research approaches encompass doctrinal legal research, elite interviewing, comparative analysis, content analysis, and interdisciplinary research particularly with political science.

My research has attracted funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and the Welsh Parliament. In 2018 I was a Parliamentary Academic Fellow supporting and advising the House of Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee and other Parliamentary staff on the UK's future relationship with the EU.

I joined the University of York in 2010. Previously I was a Research Associate in the multidisciplinary ESRC Centre for Competition Policy at the University of East Anglia.  I have held visiting fellowships at the European University Institute, Florence; iCourts Centre of Excellence for International Courts, University of Copenhagen; and GOVTRUST Centre of Excellence, University of Antwerp. Before entering academia I worked for several years at the European Parliament and in a law firm.

I am Chair of Research Committee for Law. I am a founding co-convenor of the York Regulation Network (with Eva Heims, Politics, and Slobodan Tomic, School for Business and Society) bringing together researchers from across the University, and I was York research lead for the Future of Europe theme in the York-Maastricht Partnership.
