Research Group: Epidemiology and Cancer Statistics Group

Simon trained as a mathematician at the University of Cambridge (MA, MMath), where he specialized in the study of geometry and topology, and then at the University of Warwick (PhD), where he specialized in differential geometry, writing his PhD thesis on the geometry of supermanifolds. From Warwick, he joined Hewlett-Packard, initially working on the stochastic modelling of computer systems and in performance engineering. He moved to Hewlett-Packard Laboratories where he worked on a variety of advanced computational and mathematical projects and led the Mathematics, Security and Cryptography research group.

After leaving Hewlett-Packard, he returned to academia, taking an MSc in Medical Statistics at the University of Lancaster, after which he moved to the University of York.

Simon works in the Epidemiology and Cancer Statistics Group where he leads the analytics team. He specializes in the statistical modelling of complex epidemiological data. Much of his work focusses on modelling events in the life-course of patients diagnosed with one of the haematological malignancies, using data from the Haematological Malignancy Research Network. He also works closely with the Cardiovascular Health team and consults widely inside and outside the department.
