Biography
IMPORTANT
It is very possible that, from the 1st October 2016, that my profile shows me as being a former or ex-employee of the University of York. This would be due to a 'feature' of the PURE input data feed process. I am still an active reesearcher in the Department and I am still publishing my research work as a full time employee in the Department of Electronics, University of York.

I have been a Lecturer, then Senior Lecturer and from 1st October 2016 Professor in the Engineering Management group within the Department of Electronics at the University of York since 1993. I am the Research Group Leader with 8 current resdearch students and a number of successfully completed students. Prior to that I spent 18 years in Industry as an electronic design engineer, technical manager and programme manager for a number of different companies.
In addition to lecturing and administration within the Department I am also lead the taught Masters in Engineering Management.
My research interests include the development, understanding and measurement of generic transferable skills, the education process, entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship and innovation in industry.
The Engineering Management research group comprises myself, a colleague and 8 PhD students.
In addition to my Departmental activities I am also:
- Chair of the University Health Safety and Welfare Committee
Past roles include:
- Provost of Alcuin College from October 2001 to July 2015
- York Director of the White Rose Centre for Excellence in Teaching in Learning in Enterprise – The CETL was a HEFCE funded initiative providing capital funds to establish an Enterprise Zone and recurrent funds over 5 years to take the enterprise agenda forward across all disciplines.
- President of the European Association for Education in Electrical and Information Engineering – The EAEEIE is dedicated to supporting educators across the breadth and depth of the Electrical and Information Engineering disciplines. I was the President for 6 years.
- Honorary Secretary of the York Philatelic Society – Well everyone is allowed an anorak! Mine is the study of early Australian Commonwealth postage stamps.
