Research interests

My research covers all aspects of real-time, embedded, and cyber-physical systems, from application software interacting with physical dynamics, to programming languages, operating systems, communication protocols, and hardware platforms.

The focus is on gaining trust, high performance, and resource efficiency.

The application domains include automotive systems (autonomous and electric vehicles), robotics, industrial automation, 5G networks, avionics, transportation management, and Internet of Things.

  • On timing predictability, my emphasis is on multiprocessor heterogeneous architectures with shared hardware/software resources, where fundamental theories are largely missing.
  • On automotive technologies, I am investigating TSN for in-vehicle communication and AUTOSAR Adaptive for operating systems.
  • On software vulnerability detection, I have extensively used fuzzy techniques. For example, our recently developed tool called Em-Fuzz has discovered 16 previously unknown vulnerabilities in embedded firmware, and we have reported them to the upstream product vendors. Seven have been assigned unique CVE identifiers in the U.S. National Vulnerability Database.


Dr. Chang obtained his PhD from the Technical University of Munich with Summa Cum Laude (Highest Distinction) in 2017. The supervisor is Samarjit Chakraborty, Chair of Real-Time Computer Systems (now William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Chair Professor with UNC Chapel Hill). The second supervisor is Anuradha Annaswamy, Director of Active Adaptive Control Lab, MIT, President-Elect of IEEE Control Systems Society. His bachelor degree is from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, with First Class Honors.
