Nuclear physics experiments employ large, advanced arrays of detectors for measuring decays of rare isotope beams produced in minute quantities. These arrays require complex and versatile support structures to allow investigators to mount and optimally arrange their detectors.
The ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS, https://isolde-ids.web.cern.ch/) is one of the permanent experiments at the ISOLDE facility, part of the CERN accelerator complex, the world’s foremost nuclear and particle physics laboratory. York plays a leading role in this collaboration, running several experimental campaigns with the device, and sitting on its steering committee.
CERN is undergoing a series of upgrades to increase the intensities and diversity of beams available at ISOLDE. To exploit these new frontiers, an upgrade of IDS is required. New detectors have been purchased and a new structure designed. However, funds are required to start construction. This new system will provide the York group access to the unprecedented beams available at ISOLDE.
