Description

Within the Muslim community, there is a strong focus on educational leadershipiv. Participation in HE also continues to rise rapidly amongst ethnic minorities who now represent one in six of home undergraduates in Englandv,vi. Despite increased ethnic participation in HE, Muslims have low levels of qualifications, with only a quarter over 16 years having level 4 and above qualificationsvii.

As traditional Christianity has declined in the UK, Islam has rapidly grownviii,ix. After Christianity Islam is the second largest religion in the UKx. By 2050, Muslims will represent 16% or 13 million people in the UK populationxi. With
33% of the UK Muslim population aged 15 or under they represent a key low-researched demographicxii.

This research study will conduct a one-day conference workshop in York with (Imams, academics and Muslim youth) to provide insight into Muslim youth's 'faith capital' and their educational aspirations.
