Description
A three year collaborative project funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (€50,000) to study the explanatory function of abstract objects.
Layman's description
We often explain phenomena by citing their causes. Abstract objects - such as numbers - do not enter into causal relations. But we sometimes seem to appeal to abstract objects in explanations ("We couldn't share the sweets out equally because there was 17 of them and 17 is a prime number"). Do abstract objects play a genuine explanatory role, and if so what does this tell us about (a) the nature of abstract objects, and (b) the nature of explanation.
