Description
Subproject of the YorVoice Sparks Research Centre. Funding awarded: £ 30,344.01
Layman's description
Breath is a basic component of the speaking voice mechanism and a major contributor to voice power and health. Breathing exercises are essential for people undergoing speech and voice therapy, as well as for professional users of the voice.
In collaboration with a speech and language therapist and an app (UX/UI) developer, this project will research those aspects of the voice that are improved through breathing techniques and develop an app that will contribute to educating the public on the role of proper breathing for the human voice and aim to contribute to its improvement and (re)training. The app will primarily consist of a suite of breathing exercises presented through video tutorials and on-screen prompts and with personalisation options. It will also offer reminders and gamification techniques to ensure consistency in practising. The app thus aims to improve the quality of the execution of the exercises and recovery for the general public, and eventually offer a way to bridge long waiting times between SLT consultations. In addition, the knowledge gained from the project will increase our understanding of the role and physiology of breathing for different uses of the human voice and pave the way for future studies.
