Description
The Centre for High Altitude Platform Applications (CHAPA) is a research centre dedicated to developing novel uses for high altitude platform (HAP) infrastructures and has been created by the Departments of Electronic Engineering, Chemistry and Environment. We are currently specialising in HAP applications relating to wireless communications, environmental monitoring and control for smart cities, and atmospheric science research.
Key findings
A low altitude tethered Helikite testbed has been implemented at York and completed 3 flights. The first flight took place at York on 13 March 2017 which successfully evaluated the capability of the Helikite with its ground base and launch vehicle. The second flight took place at Bramham park on 26 April 2017. The Helikite carried the environmental payload to 400m altitude and stayed for several hours to collect data of the air. The third flight took place at York on 23 June 2017. The Helikite carried the wireless communications payload to 60m altitude and established wireless links to SDR testbeds on the ground. Wireless signal propagation measurements have been taken during this flight.
