Description
There is increasing concern about the level of mental health problems in University students. However, there is very little high-quality data on student mental health. The aim of the current study is to develop an acceptable and efficient method of collecting data on wellbeing in University students. This could then be used to establish a cohort that would allow us to learn about the natural history of mental health problems across students’ time at University and allow us to identify risk factors for the occurrence of mental health problems. It would also provide a setting in which the effectiveness of interventions for these difficulties could be evaluated.
Key findings
1. The award has helped attract further funding for the cohort from a University of York alumnus.
2. It has fostered UoY involvement in the SMARTEN network:

It has also fostered collaboration between UoY and academics at other Yorkshire Universities with the aim of setting up similar cohorts at these universities( University of Huddersfield: Prof Mike Lucock; University of Leeds: Dr Bridgette Bewick; University of Sheffield: Dr Jaime Delgadillo, Prof Michael Barkham).
4. It has also led to links between UoY and Burohappold, an engineering firm with an interest in the links between the built environment and student psychological wellbeing.
