Project Details
Description
The project studies the ways that recent migrants experience and interact with existing heritage places in Parramatta and how they generate heritage places and attachments of their own. The team will work with participants from the Chinese and Indian migrant communities in the Parramatta LGA to investigate their attitudes to and engagement with existing heritage sites in Parramatta (as listed on government heritage inventories) and the range of their placemaking activities that generate the kinds of place attachment which, over time, will add new heritage places to the local landscape. Methods will consist of semi-structured interviews, analysis of photographs taken by participants of local places significant to them, and heritage-making workshops. The research will inform the approach of Heritage NSW (the Linkage partner) to involving migrant communities in heritage management procedures.
