Description

This study had dual purposes: it formed part of Koen Arroo’s Masters project (Dept. of Electronic Engineering), supervised by Jon Timmis and myself, and also part of my ongoing research into creating engaging performing robots. The objective of this study was to understand ways in which our robot’s actions might be, and be created to be, engaging.

The study culminated in a series of human-robot interactions. In small groups, people were asked to interact with Nao, a commercial robot programmed to distinguish between different humans. Groups spent up to ten minutes interacting with Nao, using verbal and nonverbal communication, as well as touch. The interactions were filmed and participants were asked about their responses to interacting with the robot: how engaging was the experience of interacting with Nao? Did you like 'him'?
