Description

This research aims to explore the business models of success and well-established SEs in Thailand and compare the similarities and differences with those in the UK for learning purpose. This research begins with the literature review on social enterprises as well as strategic business models for success companies in order to build a conceptual framework for data collection. Then, multiple case study method (Yin, 2009) will be used to collect the data. A business model, as a unit of analysis, includes customer value proposition, profit formula, key resources, and key processes, that work together to enable the establishment and the growth of SEs. In-depth interviews with the established SEs in Thailand across different industries including food industry e.g. Cabbages & Condoms, Doi Tung, Lemon Farm; education industry e.g. Learn Education, and media industry e.g. Thai Health Book (Health Me), etc. We will target 10 case studies as this will allow for publications

in high ranked international journals. The team will source data from multiple sources of evidence including interviews, internal documents, secondary documents and observations.

Key findings

The findings from this research will identify both the type of social enterprise business models and effective management practices to scale-up social enterprise in the Thai context, whereas to date most of SE research has been conducted in western countries context. These new models and frameworks will provide a better understanding of SEs themselves and how different context could shape up the best practices to be similar or different from those in the UK.
The key beneficiaries of this research are Thai SEs who are still in their early stages as well as those who are to start SEs in Thailand. Academic beneficiaries are those who are providing courses in social enterprises, social entrepreneurships, e.g. Srinakarinwirot University and Thammasat University. Furthermore we will also target policy makers with our findings.
Our aim is to produce 3 journal articles in top ranked international journals such as Journal of Strategic Management, Academy of Management Journal and Organization studies. In the next 12-18 months we would also apply for further funds to compare and contract with other new industrialised countries in SE Asia.
