Description
Society for Research in Higher Education funded project on staff perspectives on 'lad culture' in higher education
Layman's description
This project explored staff perspectives and experiences of 'lad culture' in a range of universities in the UK. The project aimed to understand how staff experience, understand and address 'lad culture' across a range of higher education institutions.
Key findings
The project found that 'lad culture' was a term that many staff across the six universities were familiar with and that most staff who had encountered 'laddish' behaviour described it as sexist, misogynistic and often homophobic. Few staff felt that universities were actively tackling 'lad culture' or that the impacts of sexual harassment and violence were recognised in university policies or practices.
