Modality, Morality & God

Project: Research project (funded)Research

Project Details

Description

The project investigated the application of deviant systems of quantified modal logic to solve longstanding problems in the philosophy of religion, such as, whether it would be right to torture innocent babies if God commanded it.

Layman's description

If God is the source of morality, could it be right to torture innocent babies if God commanded it? This project shows that it's consistent to maintain that God is the source morality consistently with its not being right to do everything he commands. In particular, if God isn't loving, then there aren't any truths at all about morality, in which case, it wouldn't be right to do what he commands.

Key findings

The project developed a deviant modal logic to show the consistency of God's being the source of morality with it not being always obligatory to obey his commands.
