Physics Research Equipment Fund: Tailored-voltage waveforms for a new generation of electrically asymmetric plasma thrusters

Project: Research project (funded)Internal pump-priming

Project Details

Description

In this project, we applied phase-resolved optical emission spectroscopy, electrical measurements and 2D fluid-kinetic simulations to enhance control of electron, ion and neutral gas heating in electrothermal microthrusters via the application of multi-frequency 'tailored' voltage waveforms. We have developed the results into two peer-reviewed publications (one is under review, submitted June 2020) in the context of electric propulsion and a further peer-reviewed publication in the field of atmospheric pressure microplasmas. This work also feeds into a new EPSRC research proposal on a related topic, which is under development for submission in 2020.
