RPF 12/13 Laser-diagnostic facility for technological, fusion & astrophysical plasma research

Project: Research project (funded)Internal pump-priming

Project Details

Layman's description

This proposal will establish a laser-spectroscopy diagnostic facility at the heart of the research at the York Plasma Institute (YPI). The versatile, central facility will provide precision measurements for collaborative projects across all research areas of YPI, including fusion energy, plasma nanofabrication, laboratory astrophysics and plasma medicine, as well as encourage new collaborations between departments and universities.
This facility will bring together different plasma physics research areas, encouraging novel collaborative and synergistic research. It will give UoY a unique capability within the UK, advancing YPI’s ambition to be a world-leading interdisciplinary plasma institute for fundamental plasma science and related technology.

Key findings

ONGOING PROJECT. So far the new laser system has been installed in the York Plasma Institute Labs (Objective 1 achieved). EPSRC First Grant proposal (£100k) submitted but unsuccessful.
Various proof-of-principle experiments for future grants are underway as outlined in the RPF proposal (objectives 2 & 3).
Full RPF budget is spent on the laser purchase as planned.
