RPF 2015/16: Synthesising registry data for psoriatic arthritis: a feasibility study

Description
Registry datasets, such as the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Registry (BSRBR), have the potential to support evaluations throughout the complete pathway of care given that they follow patients receiving routine care for up to 10 years. This feasibility study will explore the potential to utilize registry data, preferably pooling multiple PsA registries, to inform cost-effectiveness analyses considering sequential treatment. In addition we will explore data collected on the long-term progression of disease, on and off treatment.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an incurable and debilitating condition and is associated with reduced life expectancy and large health care costs.
Existing clinical trials have not considered the entire pathway of treatments available for PsA. In practice, when patients do not respond to a treatment they will often be given an alternative treatment. Unfortunately, there are no trials that consider how effective these alternative treatments are. Consequently, health policy makers are unable to determine which pathways offer the greatest value for money. This project considers how data collected in patient registers might be used to inform this assessment.

Outputs: one peer reviewed journal article, one successful grant (see grants section: Atopic Eczema), participation in international research network on Atopic Eczema for the development of a future European grant.
