Project: Other projectOther internal award

Project Details

Description

Many ethnic minorities in the UK maintain their culture and language through community-led supplementary schools. This study focuses on Arabic supplementary schools, specifically on their educational practices for teaching Arabic; and on whether and, if so, how so-called Fundamental British Values (democracy; rule of law; individual liberty and mutual respect; tolerance of different faiths and beliefs) are taught. Further this study explores how pupils and teachers conceptualise their ethnic, national and social identity. As a pilot study for a larger project the researchers study five supplementary schools through classroom recordings, observations and interviews.
