Layman's description

Vision loss can be devastating, affecting more people as lifespans increase. Multifocal electrophysiology is a non-invasive imaging technique that can both detect and localise visual loss to facilitate prompt treatment, as well as advance our understanding of biological mechanisms underpinning normal visual function. Although the technique has gained international recognition as a useful tool for diagnosis and measurement of visual function, only a select number of sites in the UK have this capability. Our goal is to build on York’s reputation for excellent neuroimaging research by purchasing equipment to establish an internationally recognised centre for visual assessment using multifocal electrophysiology.

Key findings

VERIS Science Multifocal Electrophysiology System has been purchased, delivered (21/06/16) and installed (27/06/16). Electrophysiology team from York Teaching Hospital National Foundation Trust has visited to discuss potential clinical and research collaborations (22/06/16). Training by manufacturer has taken place (28/06/16).
Update (05/07/18): After discussion with York Hospital, notably the Ophthalmology and Neurosciences departments, it was agreed that the equipment should be housed at the hospital to allow better access to patients and skills provided by the clinical staff (e.g. pupil dilation), that cannot be provided at YNiC. We are in the process of drafting a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the Hospital to arrange moving, use and maintenance of the equipment. We are also awaiting the return of the Neurosciences department to their original location, which is currently being refurbished, before moving the equipment.
