Layman's description
South-East Asia is home to >300 million smokeless tobacco (ST) users, who are at risk of cancers and
cardiovascular diseases. In Pakistan, the prevalence varies (particularly among women) geographically
(3.7%-42.3%). To understand the environmental and socio-economic reasons for this variation, we will
analyse a previously unexplored Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) dataset in Pakistan. This
analysis will also allow us to explore causal links between ST use and birth outcomes. Our findings will
inform policy and contribute towards a future research grant (GCRF/NIHR) to develop and test
interventions to address ST use among women of reproductive age group.
