This is a collaborative research project headed by Professor Peter Coates (PI), University of Bristol. I am a CI, together with Dr Paul Warde (UEA) and Professor Georgina Endfield (Nottingham). We are conducting research into environmental change based on specific places and by engaging with the public.

My part of the project comprises and oral history project into experiences of environmental change at the vicinity of the village of Kielder in Northumberland, which is the location of a large forestry plantation and reservoir, which have become a major site for recreation and nature conservation as well timber production and water storage. The project was set up with the assistance of Northumbrian Water plc, the Forestry Commission, the Calvert Trust and members of the local community. The main interviews were conducted by a researcher, Dr Leona Skelton, in October 2012.

NB the total sum awarded by the AHRC for my part of the project was £20,407. Of this, £9096 were in directly incurred costs and the remainder for 4 hours a week of my time and associated costs. For 8 of the 12 months of the project, I was a member of staff at Durham University. None of the directly incurred costs part of the budget was spent before I started at York on 1 October 2012. The application was submitted, via the PI's institution (Bristol U) on 21 December 2011.
